The Hornby BR Mk4 Standard Coach B - Era 8, model number HOR R40191, is a testament to the engineering advancements of its time. A total of 314 Mk4 coaches were produced at Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath factory for the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, introducing numerous improvements over the Mk3 models.

Mk4 coaches entered service in 1989, significantly boosting passenger capacity. Following the privatization of British Rail in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group and leased to operators under the InterCity East Coast Franchise. An extensive refurbishment program known as 'Project Mallard' was undertaken by Bombardier Transportation between 2003 and 2005, which included new seating configurations and the introduction of onboard Wi-Fi services.

Though originally deployed on the East Coast Main Line, there are plans to utilize Mk4 coaches on additional routes with the arrival of Class 800 and Class 801 Intercity Express Trains (IEPs).
