These shapes are cut quickly using the rotary cutter rather than with a template, and they are machine stitched together with chain-piecing wherever possible. The quilt "sandwich" (of backing fabric, batting and the pieced top) is held together with machine quilting, big stitch hand quilting or with simple ties and buttons. Two methods are used for the binding-one using four strips applied separately to the four sides, producing abutted corners, and the other, slightly more complicated, using a continuous binding, mitered at the corners. Simple applique is introduced using a heart template and a technique called slashing. Chenille is used as an alternative to piecing to produce a highly textured surface for a really cuddly quilt.
